Microsoft confirms Android apps will run on all Windows 11 PCs

Windows Subsystem for Android is expected to be available later in the year. According to Microsoft, Windows 11 Android apps are available for all devices (Intel and AMD)

Microsoft will add Android Subsystem to Windows 11. This will allow support for Android Open Source Project and enable users to run Android applications on their desktop. This is similar in design to how Linux GUI apps function in Windows 11 with the Linux subsystem.

AOSP is an open source development project that Google maintains. Anyone (including Microsoft), can contribute code, new features or fixes to the repository. This has been a key factor in Microsoft's ongoing development of Surface Duo OS. It's now coming to Windows with its next-generation operating system.

Microsoft has been tweaking the project internally for their own purposes, such as Android apps support in Windows. Microsoft is working on an Android subsystem that will create a proxy app between the Android apps model and Windows apps. This will allow apps to be run on the desktop.

Microsoft has partnered with Amazon and Intel to improve the experience of Android apps on Windows. Amazon's contribution to the Appstore integration is minimal. However, Intel and Microsoft are working together on Bridge Technology. This is a runtime post compiler for 86-based apps.

Intel Bridge will allow you to run mobile applications on Intel PCs. According to Microsoft representatives, Intel Bridge will not be required on AMD or ARM. Android apps will work on all supportedWindows 11 devices regardless of their processor or hardware requirements.

"On AMD & ARM Intel's bridge technology won't need/be used. ARM devices won't require emulation/bridge technology for Android ARM apps," Microsoft officials stated during the second Windows event aimed specifically at developers.

Android apps are compiled to run on ARM so bridge technology is not required. It's unclear how this feature will work for AMD. However, Microsoft clarified that Bridge technology was not necessary or required on AMD hardware. This will allow Android apps to be available to more desktop users than initially expected.

Microsoft confirmed that Android apps will be available via Amazon Appstore. However, users will also have the ability to sideload apps onto Windows 11. After enabling developer mode, it would be possible for APK files to be installed from third-party sources.

We still don't have all the details about Windows 11's Android support. However, Microsoft officials promised that they would provide more information in future support documents.
