Microsoft is giving Windows 11 Office apps much-needed Fluent UI

Windows 11 finally has consistent design for common first-party apps thanks to WinUI and Fluent Design.

Microsoft has been testing round corners for Office apps Word, PowerPoint, and Excel internally over the past months. Yesterday's Windows Developers Event featured an official teaser for the Fluent Design overhaul for Microsoft Office apps. It also features its new rounded corners.

Windows 11 has introduced the Fluent Design, which features rounded corners and colourful icons to bring consistency to Microsoft Office apps.

The most significant change is the redesign of the header toolbar and ribbon menu. While the original features are retained, all buttons, toggles, and other elements now use Microsoft Fluent colours to ensure consistency. This is the most significant design change for Windows apps first-party in six years.

The updated Microsoft Office app design is cleaner and more consistent with the rest. It does not use design elements from different Windows versions.

You can also see a new design for the edit, save and undo/redo buttons. Office apps will also get a new universal search tool with a cleaner design and more rounded edges.

Microsoft seems to be working towards a uniform design by the end this year, as the modern header has been implemented across Windows apps.

Windows 11 design consistency

Windows 11 introduces shadow effects for context menus, hamburger menus, and other areas.

Microsoft Photos and Windows Settings, two first-party apps, are getting some new features. However, details are not yet available.

Microsoft used rounded corners up to Windows 8

Microsoft used to use the glassy aero effect with rounded corners in all its app windows. Sharp corners are now available in Windows 8 and Windows 10.

Windows 11 will bring rounded corners to all top-level Windows and app pop-ups. Microsoft will implement the rounded corners for most applications, while third-party apps can be redesigned by developers.

Microsoft plans to release Windows 11 as a free update to Windows 10 users in the second half of this year. Windows Insiders will have access to the preview builds over the next few days.
