Nvidia: 100% GPU usage in Windows 11 Task Manager is a known issue
For the last few days, Microsoft has been aggressively rolling out its 2022 update in Windows 11, the first major update to the brand new operating system. We've been using Windows 11 version 22H2 on our computers without significant problems. Users have complained that a compatibility issue caused a break in Task Manager's GPU utilization report.
A lot of users from Reddit or Feedback Hub noticed that Task Manager in Windows 11 22H2 is not showing the proper GPU utilization in the event that they are running Nvidia driver 526.47 or higher installed. Fortunately, this is an issue that is known and a solution is in the works as per a statement by Nvidia officials.
"For an unknown reason, my Task Manager reports that my GPU is running at the entirety of its resources, however it states that there is very little use of power. I'm really confused. My drivers are current and I'm not seeing any performance loss while gaming," an affected users wrote in a comment on the Feedback Hub.
This is an issue that is related to certain GeForce drivers. It was reported previously in an earlier preview build of the Windows Insider program. However, it appears it has slipped into the public version. We're experiencing the same issue although it's not a major issue and it's not 100% GPU usage is automatically stabilized.
The bug is also affecting the 3D readings on Nvidia GPUs. Like you see from the screenshot above the the Task Manager's readings of 3D of GPUs aren't precise and do not accurately reflect the actual or reported usage.
However, inaccurate GPU usage data is an inconvenience that is less than a major problem, as you are free to ignore it. But, it could be a problem If you pay close attention to GPU use when the graphics cards are under a heavy or moderate load, and you need to keep track of it.
It's worth noting that the actual use of resources will not be increasing because of the Task Manager's error in reporting therefore it's not an issue, at least on a technical level.
The good news is that Nvidia plans to fix Windows 11's 100 percent GPU utilization issue soon according to its spokesperson. It appears that there will be a solution to be included in the next beta version of GeForce drivers, and then stable. We're not sure if a fix will be added to the coming Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11.
Updates to GeForce as well as Windows 11 updates should arrive in November.
