New Windows 11 bug may prevent users from connecting to databases using SQL Server

Windows 11 is no stranger to issues and bugs and Microsoft has confirmed another issue that users could have encountered with the most recent versions of the operating system.

It was discovered in the most recent Patch Tuesday updates released on November 8th, for versions 21H2 (the first Windows 11 release) and 22H2, this latest problem can stop certain connections to databases from functioning. There is currently no known solution.

In particular, Microsoft says you might experience issues connecting to databases by using Microsoft ODBC (Open Database Connections) via using the Micrososft ODBC SQL Server driver (sqlsrv32.dll).

The connectivity error could cause an error message. clients seeing "Message Microsoft [ODBC SQL Server Driver Protocol issue within the TDS stream" or "Message [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] Unknown authentication token sent by SQL Server".

The issue first surfaced the issue first appeared in Windows 11 build 22000.1219 (for users who are running versions 21H2) and version 22621.819 (for Version 22H2) The issue has not been fixed regardless of the additional optional updates that were released during November.

Unfortunately, there's no fix that's available. If you experience this issue, there's not anything you can do apart of the waiting around for an update that will fix the issue. What you can do now is determine if any of your applications are affected by this bug.

If you're having issues with your database and you're unsure of the reason you should start an application that is using databases, then open Command Prompt (or Windows Terminal) and enter Tasklist/M sqlsrv32.dll. This will let you know whether any of your tasks are running SQL Server. SQL Server driver that's causing the problem.

Fortunately, Microsoft says it's working on the issue and that a fix is expected to be available in the near time. This month's Patch Tuesday updates will be released in the coming week, and hopefully that fixes will be added in the next update.

Be aware that this is the last update for the year, since Microsoft does not make the C as well as D optional updates until December because it's close to the beginning of the Christmas season. In the last week, a new problem was found that can cause text to become impossible to read within the Task Manager due to the incorrect colours being displayed. this is also in the process of being fixed.
